Every day, shelter dogs wake up hoping to finally meet their forever human. Hungry for love and affection, these pups eagerly try to catch the attention of visitors, barking and wagging their tails as people approach their kennels. Rudy, a quiet Pit Bull mix, was one such dog. Sitting in his kennel with sad eyes, Rudy had been rejected by his family and desperately needed someone to show him he was worthy of love.
Noticing Rudy and Learning His Story
One day, a volunteer named Stephanie walked into the Animal Rescue League of Berks County in Pennsylvania. She was grieving the loss of her beloved dog, Hank, and had come to the shelter to offer love and support to the pups. As she entered, she noticed that while most dogs were barking loudly, one dog, Rudy, sat quietly with a pensive look on his face. Instantly drawn to him, Stephanie felt her heart melt.
Rudy’s story broke Stephanie’s heart. He had been adopted by a family who later decided they no longer wanted him. They abandoned him on the streets, leaving him to fend for himself. Thankfully, the Humane Police found Rudy in a terrible state—underweight and covered in fleas—and brought him to the shelter.
Understanding the sadness in Rudy’s eyes, Stephanie began spending more time with him, taking him for walks and talking to him. Slowly, she fell in love with Rudy and decided, along with her husband Matt, to foster him with the intention of adopting him. They wanted to help him regain his confidence and become a happy dog.
Rudy Leaves the Shelter
When the day came for Rudy to leave the shelter, he hopped into Stephanie’s car and rested his head on her shoulder, showing his trust and relaxation. Stephanie was overjoyed. However, the next morning, she became worried when she noticed Rudy chewing on his feet. A call to the shelter eased her mind—they suspected Rudy had a food allergy.
Determined not to return Rudy to the shelter, Stephanie took steps to identify the cause of his allergies. She had his fur and saliva tested and began eliminating potential allergens from his diet. Rudy’s condition improved, but his weight continued to fluctuate. Further testing of his microbiome revealed food sensitivities, and once these foods were avoided, Rudy began to gain weight and thrive.
Completing Each Other’s Lives
Stephanie and Matt showered Rudy with love, and he returned their affection with snuggles and kisses. Rudy’s confidence grew, but he still needed reassurance from his parents, often seeking to hold their paws when he felt uncertain. Stephanie was grateful to Rudy for helping her cope with the loss of Hank and teaching her to be gentle with her grief and with him.
Rudy has carved out his own space in Stephanie’s heart, and she is thankful for the lessons he has taught her. She often shares cute pictures of Rudy’s adventures and sweet moments with his cat siblings, Winnie, Boris, and Ty, on Instagram. Rudy loves hiking in the woods of Berks County, Pennsylvania, and enjoys walks with his doggy friend, Gracie.
We are happy that Rudy now lives his best life, knowing he will never be rejected or abandoned again. He and Stephanie have completed each other’s lives, finding joy and love in their journey together.
